Physical and chemical characteristics

Boiling point: 334°F. Specific gravity: 0.95. Vapor density: heavier than air. Evaporation rate: slower than ether. Coating VOC: 1.72 lb/gal (252 g/L). Solids by weight: 77%. Solubility in water: insoluble. Appearance and odor: brown liquid with an aliphatic odor.

Fire and explosion hazard

Flash point: 105°F by T.C.C. method. Flammable limits in air by volume: 1.0% lower and 7.0% upper. Use foam, carbon dioxide, dry chemical, or water fog to extinguish.

Use full protective equipment including a self-contained breathing apparatus. Cool closed containers with water when exposed to extreme heat. Keep containers tightly closed and away from heat, electrical equipment, sparks, and open flame.

Rags or waste soaked with product may spontaneously catch fire if improperly discarded. Immediately place them in a sealed, water-filled metal container.

Reactivity

Product stability: stable. Avoid extreme heat, sparks, and flame. Incompatible materials: strong oxidizing materials. Incomplete combustion can produce carbon monoxide. Hazardous polymerization will not occur.

Health hazards and first aid

Excessive vapor inhalation may cause nasal and respiratory irritation, dizziness, weakness, fatigue, nausea, and headache. Repeated exposure may cause skin irritation, defatting, and dermatitis. Eye contact may cause severe irritation, redness, tearing, and blurred vision.

Swallowing may cause gastrointestinal irritation, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Do not induce vomiting. Seek immediate medical attention.

For inhalation, move to fresh air; if breathing has stopped, apply artificial respiration and consult a physician. For eyes, flush with water for at least 15 minutes and consult a physician. For skin, wash with soap and water, remove contaminated clothing, and consult a physician if irritation persists.

Safe handling, storage, and disposal

Evacuate non-essential personnel for a spill, ventilate the area, remove ignition sources, avoid skin contact and breathing vapors, and contain the material with inert absorbent and non-sparking tools.

Do not allow material to contaminate groundwater. Dispose of waste according to local, state, and federal requirements. Store in a cool, well-ventilated area away from ignition sources. Keep out of reach of children and do not take internally.

Control measures

Use a properly fitted NIOSH/MSHA-approved vapor and particulate respirator, or an air-supplying respirator, unless ventilation keeps airborne contamination below applicable exposure limits. Provide sufficient explosion-proof ventilation.

Rubber or neoprene gloves are recommended to prevent skin contact. Use chemical safety goggles or a face shield to protect against splashing.
